Policy · Version 1.0

Community guidelines

How we behave, what we share, and why wildlife always comes first.

1. Purpose

Wildlife Photographers Collective India (WPCI) is a community created to bring together wildlife photographers, birders, nature enthusiasts, mentors and learners in a respectful, collaborative and meaningful environment.

This policy exists to keep WPCI:

  • respectful and inclusive
  • focused on wildlife and photography
  • supportive rather than competitive
  • useful for learning and knowledge exchange
  • free from spam and excessive self-promotion
  • aligned with responsible community behaviour

By participating in any WPCI space, you accept these guidelines.

2. Respectful conduct

Treat one another with courtesy and respect. Healthy discussion, differing opinions and constructive debate are all welcome.

The following are not:

  • personal attacks
  • abusive or insulting language
  • bullying or harassment
  • discriminatory remarks
  • deliberate provocation
  • repeated disruptive behaviour
  • disrespect towards members, mentors, administrators or organisers

Disagree with ideas without attacking people. Administrators may step in where a discussion becomes unnecessarily confrontational.

3. Staying on topic

WPCI is about wildlife photography, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, insects and macro, natural history, wildlife behaviour, photographic technique, equipment, image processing, field locations and experiences, responsible observation, conservation and community learning.

Keep posts reasonably connected to those areas. Unrelated discussion, political debate, generic forwards and religious discussion should be avoided unless administrators specifically permit it.

4. Sharing photographs [PLATFORM]

So that everyone's work gets seen, avoid flooding the community with images in quick succession.

  • One image per post, ordinarily
  • Up to five images per day, ordinarily

Albums, Photo Stories and galleries have their own limits.

Administrators may relax these for event reports, educational posts, assignments, photography challenges, Photo Stories and other approved activities.

5. Give other people's work room [PLATFORM]

WPCI is for appreciation and learning, not competition for attention.

Avoid posting your own photograph immediately after someone else has shared one. As a guide, leave roughly 15–20 minutes, particularly during busy hours.

This is common sense, not a stopwatch. It exists so photographs get seen, members have time to appreciate each other's work, and the feed does not become a stream of competing uploads.

6. Critique

Critique only when critique has been requested.

Not everyone sharing an image wants technical criticism.

When feedback is requested, make it constructive, specific and respectful. Useful ground: composition, exposure, focus, background, framing, post-processing, subject placement, field technique.

Critique must never become personal criticism, ridicule, dismissiveness, equipment shaming, or unfavourable comparison with another photographer.

When critique has not been asked for, appreciate the image and leave the technical notes aside.

7. External links

You may share links to your own relevant photography content, including your own Instagram posts.

But external links should not replace taking part here.

  • Links to your own relevant work — fine, in moderation
  • Repeatedly sharing unrelated third-party posts — avoid
  • Forwarding viral content to generate activity — discouraged
  • Suspicious, misleading, commercial or irrelevant links — prohibited

Administrators may remove links that are unrelated, repetitive, promotional, misleading or unsafe.

8. Promotions and commercial content

WPCI is not an advertising platform.

Do not post, without prior approval from administrators: commercial advertisements, paid workshops, wildlife or photography tours, equipment sales promotions, business promotions, affiliate links, sponsored content, or paid services.

If you have something genuinely relevant to offer, contact the WPCI administration team. Where it benefits the community, WPCI may approve the post, publish it through an official WPCI account, or decline. Approval is at WPCI's discretion.

9. Spam

Not permitted: bulk forwards, chain messages, repetitive greetings, unrelated videos, memes unconnected to wildlife or photography, repeated advertisements, unsolicited commercial messages, fake alerts, clickbait, and content mass-copied from other groups.

WPCI is a place for interaction, not forwarding.

10. Administrators

Administrators maintain the health and purpose of the community. They may clarify rules, guide members, remove inappropriate posts, moderate discussions, restrict promotional content, issue warnings, temporarily restrict participation, or remove members in serious or repeated cases.

Contact an administrator whenever you need clarification or help. Administrative action is intended to be proportionate and focused on protecting the community.

11. Moderation and enforcement

WPCI generally follows a progressive approach:

  1. Informal reminder
  2. Formal warning
  3. Removal of content
  4. Temporary posting restriction
  5. Temporary suspension
  6. Permanent removal

Serious violations may skip straight to removal — harassment, abuse, deliberate spam, fraud, repeated commercial solicitation, serious ethical violations, or conduct that could materially damage WPCI or its members.

12. Wildlife ethics and responsible photography

WPCI expects members to place the welfare of wildlife ahead of obtaining a photograph.

Avoid practices that disturb, stress, manipulate or endanger wildlife, including:

  • disturbing nests or breeding sites
  • excessive use of calls or playback
  • baiting wildlife purely for photography
  • unnecessarily handling wildlife
  • crowding animals
  • damaging vegetation or habitat
  • blocking animal movement
  • approaching beyond a safe and responsible distance
  • disclosing sensitive wildlife locations irresponsibly

Where an image appears to involve questionable field practice, administrators may ask for clarification or take moderation action.

The photograph is never more important than the welfare of the subject.

13. Copyright and ownership [PLATFORM]

You keep copyright in every photograph you share, unless you separately agree otherwise.

Only upload photographs that you created yourself, own the rights to, or are legally authorised to share. Never present another photographer's work as your own. Where third-party content is shared for teaching, credit it wherever possible.

WPCI may display member-submitted photographs within its own community platform in accordance with its platform terms and permissions.

14. Privacy and sensitive information

Respect other members' privacy. Do not publicly share anyone's phone number, email address, home address, private messages or personally sensitive information without their permission.

Be careful when sharing exact wildlife locations, particularly for sensitive or nesting species.

15. Community spirit

WPCI is built on collective learning and appreciation. Members are encouraged to appreciate others' work, answer genuine questions, help beginners, share field knowledge, encourage responsible photography, participate constructively — and contribute more than they promote.

The aim is a community where people feel comfortable sharing both their best photographs and their learning experiences.

16. Commercial activities and partners

WPCI may undertake selected social initiatives, collaborations, events or limited commercial activities with its partner GP Pro or other approved partners.

Participation is entirely voluntary. You are free to decide whether to participate, purchase, register or engage with any service. Membership creates no obligation to take part. Unless stated otherwise, individual commercial decisions remain your own responsibility.

17. Disclaimer

WPCI is a community platform for wildlife photography, learning, networking and responsible engagement with nature.

Opinions expressed by members are their own and do not automatically represent the views of WPCI, its administrators, founders, mentors or partners.

Members remain individually responsible for their posts, photographs, external links, field conduct, travel decisions, financial transactions and interactions arising from participation.

WPCI makes reasonable efforts to moderate the community but cannot guarantee the accuracy of every statement, recommendation, sighting, identification or external link shared by members.

18. Acceptance

Participation in WPCI signifies acceptance of these guidelines. WPCI may update this policy as the community, technology and activities evolve. Where significant changes are introduced, members will be informed through WPCI communication channels.

Share thoughtfully. Appreciate generously. Learn continuously. Photograph responsibly.
